Building a Safer Abia: A Step Toward Secure Communities
On Thursday, July 10, 2025, the Abia State Government will host a special event titled “Building a Safer Abia” at the International Conference Center in Umuahia. The event, scheduled for 12 noon, is in support of the Abia State Security Trust Fund, an initiative aimed at strengthening the state’s security infrastructure and community protection.
This gathering follows a series of major reforms by Governor Dr. Alex Otti, who signed the Abia State Security Trust Fund Law No. 5 of 2024 earlier this year. The law is designed to provide a sustainable funding system for security in the state, enabling both public and private sector contributions.
Key figures involved in the initiative include Obiamarije Stanley, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Ubani Nkolika Cleopatra, Secretary of the Trust Fund. The event is expected to bring together stakeholders from across Abia, including traditional leaders, business owners, security personnel, and residents, to discuss ways to support and strengthen community security efforts.
Governor Otti has already taken practical steps to back the initiative. In late 2024, his administration provided 20 security patrol vehicles to various agencies in the state. He also established a Security Advisory Council chaired by retired Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, reflecting the administration’s strong focus on safety and law enforcement.
The July 10 event is more than just a formal gathering. It is an opportunity for citizens to understand how the Security Trust Fund works, how funds will be used, and how communities can get involved. With increased security challenges across Nigeria, Abia State is taking the proactive approach of combining government policy with grassroots participation.
As Abians prepare to attend this event, key questions remain: How will contributions be tracked? What mechanisms will ensure transparency? What role will local communities play going forward?
The success of this initiative will depend not just on legislation or events, but on continued collaboration, clear accountability, and measurable results. If these are achieved, the state will not only be safer—it will serve as a model for others to follow.
